The 2008 edition of the VINC, the all-news channels meeting, organised by COPEAM and RaiNews24, in collaboration with Eutelsat and the local institutions of Venice, will be held as an event in the framework of Eutelsat’s Sat Expo Europe (information and communication technologies international expo (Info: http://www.satexpo.it/en), that will take place in Rome, from 27th to 29th of March.
The meeting will take place on 29th March and will be focused on the topic “Migrations and new intercultural audiences: the role of information by satellite”.
The satellite technologies, on one hand, and the current huge migrations, on the other one, are reshaping the TV audiences’ profile : the distinction between local and international audience is becoming more and more relative and shadowy and, consequently, the Media responsibility in it has increased. Starting from this assumption, most of the all-news channels are setting new editorial policies, conceiving new information offers and programmes: for example, the Arabic web-sites of CNN and BBC (that will launch in 2008 the new BBC Arabic Television), the Arabic channels of France24, Russia Today, Deutsche Welle and, in the next future, Euronews; Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera in English. Who is the potential and actual target-audience of these channels? Can they successfully address to the new inter-cultural audience? What differences in style, formats and editorial approach can be identified among them? Do immigrates choose such channels as an information source? Are the TV brands effective enough so to catch these audiences' fidelity? These are just some of the questions that can be discussed together during the meeting.
As in the other editions, representatives of BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, Al Arabiya, Euronews, NTV Turkey, Russia Today, Nile News, RaiNews24, France24 and Canal 24 Horas will take part in this discussion that, for the first time, will be opened to a public made of information and media professionals and to communication and journalism students.
On the 28th March, institutional personalities and the representatives of ASBU, EBU, ABU (Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union) and AUB (African Union of Broadcasting) will discuss about the topic “Communication and geo-politics: the satellite TV in the new migrations era” and, in the afternoon, projects aimed at developing inter-cultural integration will be presented; among these, COPEAM Secretary General will present TERRAMED project.
