The Italian public broadcaster RAI, in collaboration with COPEAM and ASBU, organized an online training on “Audiovisual archive digitization: key recent updates”, with 3 sessions held between February and March 2025.
The initiative, gathering more than 70 international beneficiaries, took place in continuity with the course on archives digitization held by Rai in Rome in November 2022, and was open, once again, to COPEAM and ASBU broadcasting members from the Balkans and the MENA Region.
The international community of professionals involved had the chance to gain new insights and updates in the field of AV archives digitization, thanks to the contribution of several RAI departments, such as the Archives Department “Teche”, the CRITS-Centre for Research, Technological Innovation and Experimentation, Rai Technology Department and ICT.
The training programme ranged from new technologies for the restoration of archival materials to the use of generative artificial intelligence aimed at metadata processing, to the analysis of specific innovative projects carried out by Rai such as the SFERA project (new systems of Content Management) and the Mic project (digitization of the Italian public broadcasters’ news since 1954).
A special session was dedicated to assessing the progress made by the participating broadcasters in the last 2 years, to identify critical issues and discuss possible solutions.
Thanks to this initiative, professional networking in the framework of COPEAM Audiovisual Heritage Commission was also revitalized and strengthened.
