
Tunis, 3-4 June 2015
COPEAM was invited to take part in the consultation meeting held in Tunis on 3 and 4 June 2015, in the framework of the EC project “Medmedia – Towards Media Sector Reform in the Southern Mediterranean Region”.
After two-day exchanges and debates between the attending stakeholders, a number of recommendations were drafted and shared by the participants as follows:
- Adoption of editorial or deontological charters devoted to gender equality.
- Creation of one or more national directories in/of enterprise gathering the Tunisian expert women from all sectors (‘Who’s who’).
- Women promotion as sources of information in media content.
- Endorsement of a debate on the weak presence of journalist women in the audiovisual top management.
- Opinion evaluation within the news rooms on gender issues, internal personnel and executives’ awareness raising and training about gender equality
- Monitoring and fight against discriminatory and stereotyped programs.
- Adoption of lexicons to be avoided expressions (discriminatory, stereotyped, etc.) and of appropriate and respectful terminologies.
- Production, coproduction or exchange of gender-oriented programs.
- Adoption of internal evaluation tools namely based on the UNESCO Gender Sensitive Indicators for Media (GSIM).
- Strengthening the broadcasters’ responsibilities face to gender equality and national obligations.
- Reinforcement of media programs’ monitoring and of the respect of the commitment taken under the national obligations.
- Promotion of a national debate on the opportunity of adopting a national coherent gender equality policy in the Tunisian audiovisual sector.
